Sophia Friedel is a Research Associate and PhD Candidate at the Institute for Social Movements and the Joint Ruhr-Universität Bochum and IG Metall Working Centre. She studied History and German Studies as well as Historical Sciences at Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen and Queen Mary University London and successfully completed both the first and second state exams in German Studies and History, as well as the MA in Historical Sciences. Since 2021 Sophia is part of the EURODEM project Workplace democracy: a European ideal?: discourses and practices about the democratization of work after 1945, funded by the DFG and the ANR, and is writing her dissertation on 'Co-determination' - a German model for Europe, 1934-mid 1990s (working title). Her recent project investigates the contradiction between practices and discourse on Workplace Democracy in Germany with a focus on transfer research. Additionally, she is a member of the Academic Staff Council at Ruhr University Bochum.
Sophia is coordinating the Working Group "Economic and Industrial Democracy" of the European Labour History Network, alongside Aurélie Andry (Université d’Évry Paris-Saclay) and has recently resided as a Research Fellow at the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz. Most recently, together with Pedro Teixeira, Sara Lafuente Hernandez, Philipp Reick and Aurélie Andry she was awarded a NetIAS Constructive Advanced Thinking grant for the research group “Democracy at work: Historical perspectives and future challenges for employee representation in Europe”.
Her research focuses mainly on economic and industrial democracy, remembrance culture and historical-political education, as well as on transnational trade union history and the circulation of political and economic concepts and ideologies.
